For starters, you get a plane that does the jobs of two standard planes and functions as a precision thickness plane. Versatility. Precision. Durability. Beauty. One Blade, Two Functions
John Economaki has pioneered a new way to build a block plane that uses an iron with dual edges. One edge is ground for end grain (42° attack angle), while the other edge is ground for general-purpose use (47° attack angle). The dual edges eliminate the need, space and cost of owning a low angle and regular block plane, both essentials for any serious woodworker. When not in use, the rear edge of the iron is protected with an
aluminum guard.
Becoming a Thickness Plane
Bridge City is the only manufacturer that makes planes that are ready to receive depth skids, turning the HP-9v2 into a 2" (50.8mm) thickness planer. You’ll be able to dimension stock with 0.002" (0.05mm) or greater repeatable accuracy, up to 1-3/8" (35mm) in thickness. Some of the more obvious uses for this functionality are jewelry boxes, inlay strips, shoji screen components and any project where precisely dimensioned thin material is required.
Precision Depth Cuts in 0.003" (0.07mm) Increments
The blade adjustment mechanism permits extremely fine blade advancement. The lead screw features five circular cutouts that help you make incredibly small incremental depth adjustments. One full revolution clockwise of the adjusting knob will increase the depth of cut by 0.003" (0.07mm). You can decrease the depth of cut by rotating the lead screw counter clockwise.
Ergonomic Design
The Plane sides have been “skeletonized” to create a unique appearance that differs greatly from traditional European designs. By eliminating the traditional cross pins found in most metal planes, we were able to design the body to fit hands of all sizes. The solid stainless steel investment cast rear tote fits palms perfectly.
Four-Linkage Mechanism for Blade Tension
Moving the cap downward until it snaps into place will tighten the blade. These components are CNC machined from solid aluminum and anodized to create a beautiful finish that is almost as hard as a diamond.
Dual-Faced Fence
A guide fence threads directly into the side of the Plane. By attaching two fence posts to either side, the guide fence allows you to plane both square and 45° beveled edges. The guide fence also allows inexperienced woodworkers and individuals with disabilities to achieve accurate results.
